Both men and women go through a period in their lives when their hormone levels begin to drop. In women, this stage is called menopause. Women going through menopause often experience such symptoms as weight gain, irritability, sudden mood changes, and loss of sexual desire. Every woman, and most men know about menopause. However, much fewer people know about the male version of this condition called andropause.

Andropause is caused by a decline in testosterone production due to aging. Men going through andropause experience symptoms that are very similar to those experienced by women going through menopause. However, unlike menopause, which occurs suddenly and is fairly easy to diagnose, andropause progresses much slower and is often overlooked and left untreated in many men.

Research shows that 91 percent of men going through andropause experience decreased libido and many begin to show signs of erectile dysfunction. Going through andropause can be a very difficult part in a man’s life both physically and emotionally. Men who suffer from low libido or erectile dysfunction are often reluctant to discuss these problems with doctors or even their spouses. This often leads to relationship problems and a significant decrease in the quality of life and happiness for many men and their families.

Fortunately, with today’s medical advances, male andropause caused by low testosterone can be treated in a number of ways including skin patches, weekly testosterone shots and topical gel formulations. If you think you might be experiencing the signs of andropause, make sure you talk to a qualified physician who can perform a complete hormonal evaluation and determine the most effective treatment for your specific needs.
