Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) or low libido, as it is most commonly referred to, is a condition that affects millions of men and women nationwide. People suffering from HSDD often experience a significant decrease in sexual interest that leads to negative effects on their overall wellness and quality of life.

It is important, however, to make a distinction between HSDD and erectile dysfunction in men. While erectile dysfunction is primarily caused by vascular problems impeding proper blood flow necessary for an erection, HSDD is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain that leads to the loss of sexual desire. When left untreated, HSDD often leads to erectile dysfunction problems in men, as they become unable to get excited at the prospect of having sexual intercourse.

It is quite common for libido to decrease in both men and women as they go through meno/andropause and for them to experience a significant drop in their testosterone levels. Many studies have shown that testosterone replacement therapy helps men and women increase their libido and enjoy being sexually active. But while men have long been taking advantage of testosterone treatment, not many women know that they could also benefit from hormone supplementation.

A 2014 study examining the effects of testosterone treatment for HSDD in women found that it has a “positive effect on sexual response [in women],” and leads to “increases in sexual desire, the frequency of sexual activity, and sexual satisfaction in women receiving androgen therapy.”

However, it is extremely important to first diagnose HSDD properly, as it may be caused by a number of different conditions including physical, psychiatric and psychological problems. Make sure to talk to your doctor about any sexual health problems you may be experiencing to help rule out any issues that are not related to HSDD. I hope that this blog will help you know more about Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder and allow you to approach and treat this serious condition in the most effective way possible.
